£200 MILLION MEGA DATA CENTRE IN WALES OPENS FOR BUSINESS
NGD Europe Is One of Europe’s Biggest And Most Advanced Next Generation Data Centres
Newport, Wales, 14 October 2009: NGD Europe, one of Europe’s largest and most technologically advanced data centres is now open for business following completion of the essential phases of a £200 million project to convert and upgrade a former semiconductor plant near Newport, South Wales.
Next Generation Data Ltd., the owner and operator of the new data centre, is making available a wide range of large scale wholesale space solutions and has already agreed long term contracts with several major blue chip organisations. These will begin moving in their data centre operations from early next year.
NGD Europe is a Tier 3 data centre facility and is one of the biggest and best equipped of its kind. Among NGD Europe’s many unique features is a high capacity power supply direct from the super grid as well as on-site high-speed, low latency fibre connections from the major telecoms carriers. Inside the massive three-floor 75,000 sq metre building there are a number of separate data halls of varying sizes available all with independent services, resilient power supply and cooling systems.
Capable of housing up to 19,000 server racks, NGD Europe has been purpose built to support the high level technology infrastructure necessary to meet growing global demand for secure, environmentally-friendly data storage and processing. This includes capacity for supporting the power-hungry and intensive computing environments needed to support Cloud Computing, Super Computing and Grid Computing.

“In a very tough economic climate we are delighted to have come through on time and on budget with the first critical phase of this extensive project,” said Simon Taylor, Chairman and Co-founder of Next Generation Data. “NGD Europe is designed to cater for all current and future computing requirements as befits a true next generation data centre. Large organisations with several older data centre sites that have become too small or constrained by lack of power now have a great opportunity to move here and save money by consolidating their operations under one roof.”
Nick Razey, Next Generation Data’s Chief Executive Officer, added: “We are focused on offering customers the highest quality of service, flexibility, scalability and cost effectiveness. Being well away from London and the South East means we are able to offer domestic and overseas customers a host of benefits including significant savings on space costs and copious supplies of power and communications capacity. With reliable data centre power supply already a rare commodity, our direct connection to the grid ensures we always have a massive 180 MVA of power on tap when London locations are already struggling to find any more than 5 - 10 MVA.”
A highly secure environment is assured through a range of measures including triple-skinned walls, bomb proof glass, prison grade perimeter fencing, infra-red detection, biometric recognition and ex-special forces security guards.
In addition to the state-of-the-art data centre infrastructure and services provided, NGD Europe will offer sophisticated office space for customer technical support and administration teams, with meeting rooms and conference suites available 24 hours a day.
The company is currently undergoing ISO 14001 Environmental Certification and is committed to a range of Green initiatives. Sustainable materials have been widely used in the construction of the facility.
