Time is running out for 0870
numbers, warns Elite Telecom
TIME is running out for businesses wishing to change their 0870 telephone numbers in the light of new Ofcom regulations, warn telecommunications specialists Elite Telecom.
The changes to the rules governing Number Translation Services – telephone numbers such as 0800, 0845 and 0870 – come into force from December 31st 2007. After that date any revenue from 0870 numbers will end and in many cases businesses will have to provide pre-recorded messages to inform callers of the charge they will be paying and may be charged to receive telephone calls
Matt Newing, managing director of Merseyside-based Elite Telecom, says: “The new regulations represent a major change for businesses with 08 numbers. If businesses do wish to change their telephone numbers they need to act swiftly, particularly as they will naturally have to update corporate stationery, directory entries and promotional materials.
“It is possible to change to the alternative 0871 number range but Ofcom has already confirmed that there will be fewer of these numbers available and so the supply may be exhausted quickly.
“We would urge any businesses currently using 0870 numbers to make it a New Year resolution to seek advice as soon as possible.”
