PROVAMEL JOINS FORCES WITH
THE FAMILY HEART ASSOCIATION
TO PROMOTE
A HEART HEALTHY DIET
Monday 14th May, 2001: Alpro, makers of the leading soya range, Provamel, today announced that they have reached an agreement to work with the Family Heart Association to help raise awareness of premature coronary heart disease and promote lifestyle changes that can help to promote good cholesterol levels.
Alpro will be supporting Family Heart Association events through the year and funding projects that further public education on healthy eating and a healthy lifestyle, whilst also increasing awareness of heart disease and in particular high cholesterol. In addition, Provamel from Alpro products will carry the Family Heart Association’s healthy heart logo, communicating to consumers that Provamel products may help to maintain healthy cholesterol levels as part of a healthy balanced diet and lifestyle.
The Family Heart Association, a registered charity founded in 1982, is a patient information charity and is committed to early detection in the community of families with genetic lipid disorders, including inherited high cholesterol. Having identified those who have this problem the FHA then suggests dietary and other lifestyle changes to manage the condition.
Welcoming the involvement of Alpro, Michael Livingstone, Director of the FHA said: "The Family Heart Association is committed to helping all those interested in learning more about the risks of heart disease and in particular the
importance of identifying a high cholesterol level. For those people with a high cholesterol level, relatively small changes to lifestyle can make a significant benefit to their future health and wellbeing. More information is now available on the dietary changes that can be beneficial and we need to ensure that those who would benefit receive the best possible advice.”
The Family Heart Association is advised by an eminent Medical Advisory Panel which includes some of Britain's leading specialists and is staffed by Health Professionals, who respond to telephone and postal enquiries.
John Allaway, Commercial Director of Alpro, said: "It is recognised that many deaths from heart disease are preventable and we are pleased to be working with the Family Heart Association to provide information that will enable people to recognise the problems of high cholesterol, how it should be treated and the possible changes to diet that should be considered. We recognise the need for more education in this area and we are already making informative material available to health professionals and consumers alike. With this agreement we will be able to extend our efforts and support the FHA to reach a larger audience who would benefit from more information."
Notes to editors:
1. In October 1999, the US Food and Drug Administration announced that soya products containing at least 6.25g of soya protein per serving can include on their food label, information about the cholesterol-lowering effects of soya protein as part of a low saturated fat and low cholesterol diet. For every 25g of soya protein per day, numerous well controlled and well designed studies have shown that people with moderate to high serum cholesterol levels may see a clinically significant reduction in blood total and LDL-cholesterol levels and thus a reduced risk of coronary heart disease.
