ON-LINE PETITION LAUNCHED TO KICK-START UK BROADBANDON-LINE PETITION LAUNCHED TO KICK-START UK BROAD

Added: (Wed Nov 28 2001)

Pressbox (Press Release) - One million online signatures needed to reverse national decline

Today, an online petition called www.broadband4britain.co.uk is launched to generate over one million responses as a catalyst for change in the stagnant broadband landscape of the UK. The petition aims to demonstrate the genuine frustration of British companies, and the public at the dire state of high-speed broadband services to homes and businesses in the UK. It is hoped, when presented with the petition, the government will do something REAL to help accelerate the roll-out of broadband.

The campaign is looking for:
· 100% subsidised services
· U-Turn by BT on open access
· A massive countrywide increase in education on the benefits that broadband can deliver

The spokesperson for the campaign is Barrie Desmond, a small business owner based near Cardiff, South Wales. Barrie, like many other people in the UK, is totally fed-up with the lack of progress, continued excuses, and the thought of the UK falling further behind other nations in important, global technology. The campaign's website is independent. To sign the petition, please visit www.broadband4britain.co.uk. As well as lodging support, the site gives you an opportunity to have your say or vote for what you think should specifically happen.

Statements:
“High speed Broadband services should be like water - a fundamental given right. At this time, the UK’s record is scandalous. We’re even behind countries like China and Korea. Analysts say Broadband in Britain is in decline and even Bill Gates has commented on the poor state of the UK in broadband terms calling it the biggest threat to the Internet in the UK. Blair can say what he wants about Broadband Britain – it's a joke. The wheels of the 'broadband-wagon' are falling off." said Desmond.

"The UK is already the sick man of Europe where broadband rollout is concerned and action needs to be taken before they start building the coffin," says Bob Jones, managing director of Equiinet, the Internet equipment manufacturer. "BT has stonewalled for its own commercial gain and Oftel has sat back and allowed this disgraceful state of affairs to continue. As always, the main losers are British businesses desperate for broadband services and it's about time the government empowered Oftel to effectively regulate this farce."
