Data Services Fuel Growth in Spanish Mobile Market

Added: (Tue Mar 21 2006)

Data from Wireless World Forum’s “Spain Mobile Market 2006” statistical handbook shows that the mobile market in Spain is in a strong position with revenues and subscriber numbers on the rise.

ARPU will increase to $43 pcm by 2007. Although voice ARPU will remain relatively stable for the next two years, data ARPU will increase by $1.50 to $7.30. Revenues from messaging services will also increase, but there will be greater growth in mobile content markets, causing the percentage of data ARPU from messaging to fall from 91.5% to 88.1%.

2005 saw little change in Spanish operators’ market shares. Market leader Movistar had the highest ARPU in 2005, but Vodafone customers spent the most on data services at $6.19 pcm.

As voice ARPU begins to plateau, the future focus for operators will shift to promoting their range of data services in order to boost revenues and market share.
