COMPANIES MUST PREVENT DRIVERS FROM BEING DRIVEN TO DISTRACTION

Added: (Mon Jan 08 2007)

A leading vehicle tracking management company stresses the importance companies must place on work-related road safety for its employees. It is urging employers across the region to help reduce deaths and injuries on the region’s roads through tighter restrictions on the use of in-vehicle mobile devices and effective fleet management.

Euro-Tracker VIS Limited, one of the UK’s leading manufacturer and suppliers of vehicle tracking and fleet management systems, highlights that the biggest distraction for the region’s drivers are all mobile handheld devices which have become an integral part of daily working life for employed drivers of vehicles of all sizes.

It has been researched that company car and van drivers have accident rates 35 to 50 per cent higher than private drivers because of the distraction of mobile telephone conversations and the use of data devices, the high mileages they cover and the pressures they face to meet deadlines when out on the road.

The introduction of a fleet management system not only radically improves operating effectiveness and efficiency but is the catalyst for a tightening of at-work driving health and safety practices and procedures. Installing a hands-free personal assistant button into fleets of company vehicles will help employers to prevent their drivers from becoming road offenders or worse, crash victims which will therefore save them money from loss of employee earnings, additional recruitment costs and lower insurance premiums.

Fleet management systems offer a cost effective solution to this growing and dangerous problem. As well as its many operational features, the Euro-Tracker system driver safety features includes detailed route plans and navigational aids through voice notification satellite navigation, voice recognition calling to pre-installed telephone numbers, driver RFID tags can identify drivers for proof of identify should a particular driver receive penalty points then there will be no dispute over driver identity, all of which is operated with a single personal assistant button and without the aid of a screen, panel or mobile device.

Euro-Tracker director Michael Largue said: “Managing occupational road risk (MORR) is the biggest professional safety problem for company owners and managers which the country is facing and fleet bosses have to do something about it.
We believe fleet managers should inhibit functions that are too difficult for their employees to perform, or are unnecessary while driving to encourage workers to focus on the primary task of driving whilst effectively carrying out their daily tasks. The ultimate challenge facing fleet managers is to ensure all multi-media, communication and work schedule functions can be operated simply and safely which all can be done by an effective fleet management system.”

“The bottom line is that by managing occupational road risk they are protecting their number one asset – their employees,” Michael Largue said. “And that has to be good news for everyone who uses our roads, as poorly managed occupational drivers are not only a threat to themselves, but others on the road around them.”
