Yorkshire Housing choose Assist Ltd for desktop transformation project

Added: (Fri Nov 11 2011)

Pressbox (Press Release) - Assist Ltd* (www.assist.ltd.uk) is today able to announce that they are in the process of completing a desktop transformation project for Yorkshire Housing, due to the association’s imminent relocation to Leeds. Yorkshire Housing is one of the UK’s leading housing associations. Assist is managing the installation of a new platform, and rolling out a desktop transformation for 1000 seats in preparation for the move. They are also supporting Yorkshire Housing with its Cloud applications. A not for profit organisation, Yorkshire Housing aims to provide good quality homes at affordable prices and rents to people in greatest housing needs. It has a turnover of 100 million UKP and provides more than 17,000 affordable homes throughout Yorkshire. It also provides care and support for over 500 people with learning difficulties, helps vulnerable people stay independently living in their own homes for longer through Home Improvement and Stay Put agencies, acts as the government's local agency for its HomeBuy products, helping people onto the housing ladder, and provides management services to over 900 leaseholders.

Yorkshire Housing has 27 sites around Yorkshire and 120 broadband satellite offices. All 27 of the current sites will be relocated to the new centre in the middle of Leeds. The work is a daunting task for Assist Ltd given the size of the association and the support needed. The current desktops have been in for 7 years and will be replaced by XenDesktop and thin clients. All data and applications will be centrally managed, so decreasing the amount of user load on the environment. All employees will be able to work remotely, out of the office, from home etc, and access all office systems. The new desktop service will go live in November 2011, with the relocation being completed in February 2012. The relocation has been brought forward by a year due to speedy refurbishment of the new offices. Robert Homewood, Head of Technical Development at Assist Ltd, is responsible for the project, and responsible for ensuring that Assist are at the cutting edge of future technological advancement in virtualisation and Cloud space: “We are delighted to be the partner of choice for Yorkshire Housing. The pressure is on with the relocation being brought forward, but we are ahead of schedule. This is a client and project that I’m passionate about. It is hugely exciting when technology works like this. It looks as though it will bring about total transformation” Robert Homewood – Head of Technical Development

IT has been a costly hindrance to date for Yorkshire Housing. They want it now to become a business enabler. The systems being installed will improve efficiency, lower running costs, and give value for money. Yorkshire Housing spent 250K 7 years ago on traditional PCs that have a shelf life of just 3 years. They are now spending 330K for a platform that will last them 10 years (with thin clients being expected to last 5-10 years). Housing Associations throughout the country are involved in frequent mergers & acquisitions (Yorkshire Housing was a merger of 4 Housing Associations). As such Yorkshire Housing needs to have an open platform whereby they can assimilate other associations quickly:

“By dumbing terminals and simulating applications into a stack, the cogs can be slotted into the wheels quickly as they grow” Robert Homewood

Assist Ltd will also support Yorkshire Housing with disaster recovery, should there be a natural or human induced disaster.
