More Than 3,500 Attendees and 51 Sponsors Converge at Second Annual Conference for Virtualisation

PALO ALTO, Calif., 26th October 2005 — VMware, Inc., the global leader in virtual infrastructure software for industry-standard systems, welcomed more than 3,500 people to VMworld, VMware’s industry virtualisation conference held last week at the Mandalay Bay in Las Vegas. At the conference, VMware announced major new releases of its flagship data centre products, VMware ESX Server 3 and VMware VirtualCenter 2; new services for server capacity planning and consolidation; and that more than 60 leading independent software vendors now support their software running on VMware virtual infrastructure.

In her keynote address to a full house, VMware President Diane Greene unveiled VMware Player, a free new product that enables anyone to easily run, share or evaluate software in a virtual machine on a Windows or Linux PC. Greene demonstrated how any PC running VMware Player can be used to read virtual machines. She connected her Apple iPod Nano to a PC and using VMware Player she was able to access her desktop stored in a virtual machine on the Nano.

Greene then went on to demonstrate how desktops backed up on servers can be accessed from any PC. The virtual machine with her desktop had been backed up on VMware ESX Server and she was able to access her desktop via a browser on a remote PC, demonstrating the mobility of virtual machines.

“Virtualisation had a big year and still we are in many ways at the beginning,” said Diane Greene, president of VMware. “We are privileged that VMworld is the industry event in virtualisation. VMware is leading the market and we will continue our track record of pushing the edge in virtualisation and delivering useful and highly robust products. We also are working with the industry to develop standards and collaborate through shared source code.”

Many of VMware’s enterprise customers - including ALSTOM, Covenant Health, Gannett Co., Gap Inc., Georgia-Pacific, HNI Corporation, John Deere, LEGO, Moen, Sprint and Zurich Life/Farmer’s Insurance Group – presented during the conference sessions.

Gold sponsors included AppSense, Aurema, BMC Software, Computer Associates, Dunes, EMC, Fujitsu Siemens Computers, Kingston Technology Company, MetiLinx, Microsoft, PlateSpin, RapidApp, Server Centric Consulting, Unisys and Vizioncore.
