Secure Computing’s Secure Firewall Protects Frontier Airlines’ Growing Network

Secure Firewall’s industry-leading manageability, scalability and security selected to replace Frontier’s previous firewall

SAN JOSE, CA, May 14, 2008—Secure Computing Corporation (Nasdaq: SCUR), a leading enterprise gateway security company, today announced that Frontier Airlines has switched from a competing firewall to the Secure Firewall (formerly known as Sidewinder®). The Denver-based airline selected Secure Firewall because it needed a true enterprise-class solution that would improve security and manageability while keeping pace with the company’s rapid growth.

As a major step towards firewall and virtual private network (VPN) infrastructure consolidation, Frontier selected the Secure Firewall for its proven functionality and industry-leading track record. Founded in 1994, Frontier has grown from a startup carrier with two aircraft and 180 employees to become the second largest airline operating out of Denver International Airport with 60 aircraft and close to 6,000 employees. As the company added remote sites, IT managers became concerned that network vulnerabilities were not being adequately addressed. In addition, as part of an IT infrastructure overhaul, the company planned to relocate business-critical servers off-site, complicating network security issues.

“A growing network means more complexity in network security management,” explained Steve Greenberg, IT security manager at Frontier. “We had plenty of requirements for choosing a firewall, but at the top of the list was an excellent management program that would facilitate easy and efficient administration, have a single interface for all security functions, and provide tools for creating and enforcing policy.”

Secure Computing’s Secure Firewall exceeded Frontier Airlines’ requirement for simplified security management in several ways. First, with its unified threat management (UTM) approach, the appliance incorporates best-of-breed intrusion prevention and detection, anti-virus, anti-spyware, anti-spam, URL filtering and encrypted application scanning. Second, the firewall’s ability to inspect traffic at the application layer (layer 7) makes it particularly effective in blocking attacks that come in through applications like SQL. Third, the appliance’s streamlined user interface speeds and simplifies common security management tasks. For example, creating a rule for comprehensive protection can be accomplished in half the number of screens as virtually all competing solutions.

Secure Firewall also provided greater security than Frontier’s previous solution. “Airline operations are increasingly tied into core IT systems and networks. Firewalls are a critical piece of ensuring the safety and continuity of these systems. Secure Firewall is the only firewall that has never had a CERT advisory or an emergency security patch in its history,” noted Ken Rutsky, vice president of product marketing for Secure Computing. “This unparalleled application level protection is why Secure Firewall is the choice for ‘security first’ buys like Frontier Airlines.”

Secure Computing’s Secure Firewall is also setting a new standard for proactive threat detection by integrating the industry’s first and leading reputation system—TrustedSource™ technology—into every firewall. As a result, the Frontier Airlines’ network benefits from real-time behavior monitoring of dynamic URLs, domains, IPs, message content and images. The resulting reputation scores enable proactive blocking of spam, spyware, viruses and malware at the gateway—well before they ever gain access to the network.

Finally, Secure Firewall enables Frontier to grow its operations and IT network without constantly re-working its security infrastructure. “It has been a great experience using Secure Firewall,” said Greenberg. “The solution’s strength and scalability lets us build up our system without having to purchase new, compatible appliances every time we upgrade. Secure Firewall grows as we do, and we are confident in the protection it provides.”
