Google to enter mobile market

Added: (Wed Mar 21 2007)

Pressbox (Press Release) - Google's mission statement is "to organize the world's information and make it universally accessible and useful." and it look's like this is how they may futher fulfill on the accessibility part of that statement:

An article from Mad.co.uk today states:
Search engine giant Google is believed to be looking into developing its own mobile phone.

Rumours about a possible phone have been given added impetus today following comments from Google CEO, Eric Schmidt who suggested that mobile phones could be offered for free if subsidised by advertising services.

The internet company’s UK ad revenue alone has risen by 83 per cent to £821 million in the past year.

While Google isn't commenting directly on leaks from Europe and the United States regarding the phone, reports describe a low-cost, internet-connected phone with a colour, wide-screen design.
Isabel Aguilera, managing director of Google in Spain and Portugal told newspapers last week that the company is ‘investigating’ the project and that Google engineers were using some of their allocated research time to working on a mobile phone.

A Google spokesperson in the UK said: “Mobile is an important area for Google. We remain focused on creating applications and establishing and growing partnerships with industry leaders to develop innovative services for users worldwide. However, we have nothing further to announce.”

Newspaper and blog reports in recent months have Google shopping its phone design to potential mobile phone manufacturing partners in Asia.

Google has branched out beyond computers over the past year to include web search, e-mail, mapping and other web services to new and existing global phone browsers. Rivals Microsoft and Yahoo are also racing to run web services on mobile phones.
