Commute by Hovercraft

Added: (Mon Sep 29 2008)

Use the river to get to work and stop paying congestion charges, commute to work by hovercraft.

Hovercraft may have been around for 50 years, but they have only recently become available as a viable alternative to the car.

Many cities grew from river settlements, and suffer from a lack of crossing points. River bridge crossings funnel too many vehicles at rush hour through a narrow gap, creating congestion. With too few bridge crossings available, motorists have to travel many unnecessary commute miles, and then all converge through a narrow crossing, creating jams and wasting countless number of commuting hours. If you take the direct route across the river, you could save considerable time and significantly reduce your carbon footprint.

The Hov Pod has been designed with the commuter in mind – why compete on congested roads when the river is so accessible. It seats three, and has a useful under seat storage area for briefcase and sandwiches. It has a top speed of 45 mph, and ofcourse, as hovercraft do, it can fly over any flat surface at an average height of 8 inches, so you can be away from the office, down the nearest slipway and home for dinner in no time at all. Hovercraft allow access to the river at all times – they skim over tidal streams, mud, sandbars etc. When the water runs out, just drive up slipway in style, these craft are true all-terrain vehicles.

As you have no wheels or brakes for that matter, floating on a cushion of air enables a completely different yet extremely comfortable ride. For example, a quick flick of the steering handles, and you can effect a 180 turn, or 360/720 spin – almost as if you were driving some anti-gravitational futuristic craft, back from the future.

With no submerged propeller to disturb marine life, they are also eco-friendly – you can fly over eggs without breaking any, and when hovering, they weigh less than a seagull standing on one leg.

Hov Pods seat three adults, weigh 310 Kilos, and measure 12 feet by 6. Further information available at http://www.hovpod.com
