Pressbox (Press Release) -
European market leader for materials handling expands its use of Scala’s range of products to fully integrate its business processes
26 March 2002: Arca Systems has bought Scala’s Data Exchange Server (DES) to improve its internal processes and build a foundation for extended collaboration. With existing Scala ERP installations in seven European countries (Austria, Finland, France, Germany, Spain, Sweden, UK), Arca is implementing Scala’s DES to achieve three goals:
To improve data access by connecting its business applications with a central data warehouse
To use standard technology for integration across Europe by replacing an in-house developed application integration system
To create an autonomous environment by integrating and automating third party products, such as a warehouse management and shop floor system, with the Scala ERP system
Olle Ludvigsson, CIO for Arca Systems, believes that collaboration and transparency of data is becoming increasingly important to global businesses today. “Our long-term goal is to build a fully integrated collaborative solution with the Scala ERP system as the back bone. Our strategy is to use several best-of-breed systems so any vendor that we work with has to prove to us that their system is flexible and open enough to integrate into our business platform. Easy access to accurate and fresh data from all our European units is important to be able to manage our business regardless of country borders. Scala helps us to do this because it’s open and easy to integrate with the tools we need.”
Ludvigsson adds that they have already identified several benefits and advantages with using Scala’s ERP system across Europe. The core back-office functionality of Scala, supporting our basic business processes, is the natural foundation for a global manufacturing company like Arca Systems. “Scala’s global product capabilities such as multi-lingual and multi-currency are obviously also very important to us, since we do business worldwide. We continue to use Scala because they can provide us with local support where we need it and a standard and affordable product that is comparatively easy to roll out. We are also very happy with the increased quality of Scala’s products. ‘Bugs’ in the products generate not only corrections that have to be installed, but they also cause us unnecessary problems in our business processing and bad-will among the users. When upgrades are rolled out it is of great importance that these have been well tried and tested before they are delivered to us. Today Scala has a more robust and stable product and its upgrades, that are regularly released, serve mainly to enhance the product.”
Scala recently commented on how standardisation is one of the drivers for collaboration (see press release 21 March) and how its customers are using fewer IT systems on a standard platform to build a foundation for successful collaboration. “Our customers tell us that their business processes need to be based on an open architecture so that it is easy to distribute data internally, as well as externally, between applications,” says Björn Andersson, Scala’s Senior Vice President for Northern Europe. “Integration and collaboration are key component of a winning strategy for the future and we continue to deliver both existing and new collaborative ERP software and services that are right for the needs of global businesses both today and in the future.”
