Pressbox (Press Release) -
Youngsters raced to Pingles Stadium in Nuneaton for an inspirational 2012 themed day.
The free family event was organised in partnership with Warwickshire County Council Heritage Education, NB Leisure Trust and the Coventry and Warwickshire Partnership for the 2012 Games.
The countys mobile museum was officially launched with an exhibition focusing on Warwickshire's cultural and sporting heroes past, present and future to link in with the Cultural Olympiad a four-year celebration of the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games through a range of inspirational and cultural projects.
Victorian sporting equipment such as tennis rackets, clubs and ice skates were also on display as part of the mobile exhibition which touched on the revival of the modern Olympic Games.
Coventrys Olympic swimmer Helen Slatter attended to share her experiences with visitors while Nuneatons Hayley Murray, a 2012 Olympic hopeful, gave a hammer-throwing demonstration.
Tom Clift, Partnership Manager of the Coventry and Warwickshire Partnership for the 2012 Games, said: The strength of the project is highlighted by its London 2012 Inspire Mark accreditation and also its ability and mobility to educate young people about the history of the Olympic movement outside of London.
The Pingles Leisure Centre is the ideal setting for the launch of the Museum on the Move given the links to this years exhibition - Our Games Story - and the selection of the centre as a pre-Games training camp.
Laura Pye, from Warwickshire County Council, said: I really enjoyed the day - it was great to see so many young people trying out the penny farthings and looking at the bus.
We have the exhibition in Warwickshire all year and hopefully lots of other young people and schools will get the chance to discover more about the birth of the modern Olympics and Warwickshire connections.
A number of fun activities were available to try including team games, a poetry slam, penny farthing cycling and croquet.
