Pressbox (Press Release) -
Cricket Australia has partnered with Fox Sports to bring Cricket into the next generation of technological advancement by investing more than $100,000 on improving the camera quality for the sunglasses and are also investing a huge amount on the world-first technology, including trials with a 75cm remote-controlled helicopter carrying a tiny camera. So long are the days of viewing cricket from a long range camera lens.
The new sunglasses fitted with a HD camera and amber lenses were invented by a Brisbane optometrist, Patrick Gerry, who is the mastermind behind the invention has been secretly trialling the sunglasses for the last twelve months in Brisbane. The Sunglasses are fitted with a mini high-definition camera about the size of a pea, battery, a transmitter and an aerial, which is kept in a pouch on the umpire's belt. Over time it will all become wireless.
This coming Wednesday, 18 January 2012, viewers can view the game through the umpires close when Australia plays at SCG. The umpires will be transmitting live footage for Fox Sports with the new sunglass technology. Australia cricket will use some of the footage for appeals and reviews in the future.
Craig Anderson, from The Sunglass Fix, comments;
“It’s incredible now that the fans have the opportunity to get all the action via angles previously only seen through the umpires eyes. Viewers can get in on the action by debating with their mates about the calls and make their own judgements on lbw appeals, run outs and everything else umpires adjudicate on.”

Yellow or otherwise known as amber sunglass lenses are used because they improve contrast, reduce glare, while preserving sharpness.
The Sunglass Fix specializes in sunglass lenses and Craig Anderson explains why amber lenses are popular for sports;
“Sports manufacturers use them in their specialty sports sunglasses because they’re excellent for overcast, hazy, or foggy conditions. The yellow/amber colour enhances contrast by filtering out the somewhat scattered, out-of-focus blue light from the outdoors. Nearly all sports enthusiasts use them because of these attributes in their sports sunglasses.”
Polarized sunglass are also popular in the sporting sunglass market as they further reduce glare and even out contrast in a wide range of conditions. Polarized lenses have become so popular that they’re used for everyday wear by people who aren’t playing sport because of their high level of comfort.
