London Rowing Club to race at the Centenary Australia Day
Regatta, Melbourne.
London Rowing Club will be flying the flag for Great Britain. One of the oldest premier rowing clubs, established in 1856, has been invited by The City of Melbourne, Australia, to represent Great Britain in the Australia Day Regatta on January 26th , 2002.
The televised Australia Day Regatta will see the inauguration of 'War on the Water' between Australia and England. The event involving crews from Australia containing Olympic athletes racing London Rowing Club crews on the Yarra Yarra river will become an annual grudge match for the Rowing Ashes
The first race will be a 6 boat staggered start over a set distance, to include crews from Melbourne, Sydney and Adelaide. The second will be included in the Yarra Yarra Regatta and will comprise a series of “round robin” races of 400 metres with competing crews. The premier pairing being a Melbourne eight versus a London eight.
London Rowing Club will be taking 16 oarsmen and 2 coxes to Australia and racing in a number of other events in the run up to the Centenary Regatta to acclimatise.
This is not the first time London Rowing Club have been invited to Melbourne to race, the last time being 1934, when the journey took 4 weeks on an ocean cruiser. London Rowing Club is honoured to be invited and looking forward to representing British rowing at this centenary event for Australia.
The Club is looking for financial assistance for those athletes that have been selected for this event.
