Horse riding has been a popular past time for thousands of years and still continues to grow in popularity. People have many different reasons for liking this recreational activity, from keeping fit, to socialising, or to just keep active. However, owning a horse and the equipment that is needed to go with it can be very expensive. One of the main pieces of equipment that is needed to enjoy horse riding comfortably for both the horse and yourself is the saddle. But how do you choose the right horse saddle? Here is a step by step guide;
Step 1
There are many different types of saddles, so research what type of saddle is needed. There different types include dressage, show, hunting, western and general saddles. The kind you choose depends on what you are going to be doing with the horse.
Step 2
People who are new to riding think that any size saddle will fit a horse, this is incorrect and this thinking can cause in an ill-fitting saddle, so taking measurements.
Step 3
Depending on your budget, you need to decide if you will be purchasing a new horse riding saddle or a used one. A new saddle will be custom made to yours and your horse’s maximum comfort. Used saddles can be a good choice ONLY if they are properly fitted. One advantage of buying a used saddle is if the rider is still growing in size. This is usually the case for children’s.
Step 4
You have now got a saddle that fits the horse, but you now need to look up your personal saddle fit requirements. The horse will be comfortable but if the saddle doesn’t fit you, then it will be an uncomfortable ride. So try sitting on the saddle at the tack shop. Some things to consider when getting fit for a saddle; make sure the seat is the proper width and depth for your comfort. Usually the saddle shops will have charts which indicate what size saddle to choose depending on your height and weight.
Now you are ready to saddle up.
