Following the recent successful launch of his new venture, www.totalposter.com, ex-Formula One driver, Bob Evans, went back to his roots last week track-testing F5000s at Silverstone for the May edition of ‘MotorSport’ Magazine.
MD Bob was the 1974 Rothman’s European F5000 champion and went on to drive F1s for BRM in 1975 and Lotus in 1976 but neither of these teams were able to provide him with a competitive car and he eventually retired from racing in 1985 to concentrate on his business interests. Nevertheless, Bob’s recent experience brought his driving years flooding back. “I’d forgotten how much I enjoyed it,” says a wistful Bob having driven round the circuit several times in the ex-Peter Gethin 1970 championship-winning McClaren M10B, a Trojan T101 (like the one he drove for Alan McKechnie in the 1973 F5000 series) and a 1973 Lola T330, the forerunner to his title-winning T332 and the car Bob remembers most fondly.
“I’d also forgotten how physical these cars can be!” he adds. “I must admit I was a bit apprehensive when I was asked to drive these three great classics. I needn’t have worried, it was terrific fun back in the ‘70s and I had a great time with MotorSport at Silverstone. It’s just like I remember it and I loved every minute!”
On the face of it, running his new business, TotalPoster, may seem a far cry from Bob’s motor racing days. His company, co-founded last year with another ex-racing driver turned fashion photographer, Alistair Cowin, specialises in the sale of high-quality posters and digitally-produced photographic enlargements via the Internet. Motorsport is, naturally, a speciality. Images have been gathered from photo collections and libraries all over the world and because of close ties with the sports press the site is able to post hot-off-the-press pictures in most instances the day after the event.
“This makes www.totalposter.com pretty unique,” explains Bob. “This is the first time that the general public can obtain great photographs for their own personal use which are normally either reserved exclusively for the press and publishing houses or are hidden away in specialist archives to be seen only by a chosen few. We have everything and everyone available from our site, from Fangio, Ascari, Jim Clark and Graham Hill to Schumacher, Coulthard and Irvine – to name a few! And those are just in our Motorsport section. We’ve got all kinds of other sporting images on there, as well as landscapes, animals, dinosaurs, aircraft and so on, and we’re adding new categories all the time.”
As Bob controls his operation in Cheltenham from behind a bank of computers and the latest high-tech equipment perhaps its not so difficult to draw parallels between his former life and this one, although he would be the first to admit that the adrenalin rush is perhaps not quite the same.
TotalPoster’s images are available in four sizes – A3, A2, A1 and the giant AO (1 m x 1.5 m) within a price range of £14.95 - £60.00. The company also offers a custom enlargement service for client’s own photographs and there are considerable discounts for volume orders. Shipping can be arranged anywhere in the world and framing is also offered on the site.
