Chinese man buys 7,000 golf clubs

Added: (Mon Apr 06 2009)

Pressbox (Press Release) - A Chinese entrepreneur has stunned the antiques world by purchasing a collection of over 7,000 hickory golf clubs.

The items were all made before 1930 and mark the old age of golf when clubs were fashioned from wood by master craftsmen.

John Dixon, from Edinburgh's Georgian Dealers sold the clubs to the unnamed buyer for £120,000.

"The customer found the hickory clubs by searching on the internet and coming across our site," revealed Mr Dixon.

Continuing: "He travelled over from China to inspect the clubs with a small entourage of people as he didn't speak a word of English.

"He sampled the clubs and spent a lot of time looking at every one of them and when he saw how unique a collection it was the deal was done."

There is still a huge market for hickory clubs and not just for novelty value – hickory golf events are commonplace throughout the UK and North America.
