Of all the big four races at next week’s Festival I really think the Wednesday affair is arguably the most intriguing with three major places at the top of the betting pile and hardly any of the outsiders with any strong claims.
Would Twist Magic have won last year’s Arkle had he stood up? Is Voy Por Ustedes an above average champion? And finally is Master Minded over hyped or not?
They are all difficult questions to answer, but the one definitive thing I can tell you is that Twist Magic has blossomed at home since his shock defeat at Ascot and is reported back to his best.
Of all three, the going is more of paramount importance to him than anything else and on good ground this extremely well balanced sort is a big player.
Of the three he ravels best through his races and on the whole jumps superbly and remember he still holds the whip hand, strictly on the book, over the current champion.
I think he would have given My Way de Solzen plenty to think about up the run in, in the Arkle, but one can never be adamant about these things with any degree of certainty.
Master Minded is obviously progressive, but I just wonder and indeed worry that a fast run race on ground quick enough on a track like Cheltenham may just find him out.
He is a long striding horse that needs to see a fence spot on and if he has to shorten up, could be in trouble. Don’t get me wrong, I’m not saying he can’t win, he certainly can, but maybe a flat track is always going to be his domain where it would be better and easier for the youngster to organise himself.
And so onto Voy Por. He has a tremendous record at the meeting and would have won by six or seven lengths last year had he not thumped the second last obstacle.
Proven at the time of year, at the track on the big occasion counts for plenty, but is it really enough? That’s for you to decide, but at the current odds I am beginning to favour Twist Magic, but with no real conviction with the pre-requisite that the executive don’t bungle up with the watering of the track and that can’t be assured either!
