Pressbox (Press Release) -
Cyclists are being encouraged to test their fitness and stamina this summer by entering one of the country’s major cycling sportives that takes place in Pennine Lancashire.
Pendle Pedal takes place on Sunday, 2nd August 2009.
Mark Sandamas, Director of Pennine Events, who organises the event, said: “Pendle Pedal is one of the country’s toughest sportives. People want to take part because it is a wonderful ride through some of the most beautiful countryside in Britain, there are good feed stations, it’s traffic free and a very well organised event.”
Cyclists choose either a 60-mile or a 100-mile ride through the beautiful and hilly Pendle, Ribble Valley, Lune Valley and Forest of Bowland countryside.
The cyclists ride over some of the quietest roads in the country, through stunning countryside and over climbs steeped in cycling folklore, such as the Trough of Bowland and the Nick O’Pendle.
One of those already signed up for the challenge is Brian Cookson OBE, President of British Cycling, the UK’s governing body for road racing.
Brian is credited with helping to bring some of the country’s top riders such as Olympic Champions Bradley Wiggins, Steven Burke, and Sir Chris Hoy to this part of Lancashire in recent years in races such as The Colne Grand Prix and The Tour of Pendle.
Brian said: “The Pendle Pedal is a tough, but achievable, personal challenge for those who take their fitness seriously. The hills are as tough as they get in the UK, with as much climbing in total as the riders might face in a mountain stage of the Tour de France.
“By way of compensation, the carefully chosen routes take the riders through the beautiful Pennine Lancashire countryside, so there’s always something to see, ensuring that this will really be a day to remember. I recommend it to anyone who loves a challenge.”
