Betting Update; Man Utd v Aalborg with the bookmakers making Man Utd their 1/4 favourites

Added: (Wed Dec 10 2008)

Pressbox (Press Release) - Unless there is a shock of monumental proportions in the Man Utd v Sheffield Utd game on Tuesday night, Chelsea will be going into this match with West Ham six points adrift of Fergie’s men in the race for the title.

So, with now only five games left for the big two, after this game, The Blues will know that anything but three points here will more or less hand the title to their rivals.

West Ham however are not just here to make up the numbers as they’ve got their own problems, with even a win here still not enough to pull them out of the drop-zone. They currently sit second from bottom, three points adrift of Charlton, and four off Sheff Utd. The Hammers have had a torrid time of things this season and despite possessing one of the better squads in the league they find themselves in real trouble of playing Championship football once again next season.

They looked like they had turned the corner a few weeks back with three straight wins, including victories over Arsenal, Boro and Blackburn. But they let all that good work slip last Saturday by losing the most important game of the lot, 3-0, to Sheff Utd.

On a positive note, Bobby Zamora has scored in four of their last five games, and at 7/2 to find the net again he looks their best hope of causing an upset. The Hammers will also know that with this being Chelsea’s fifth game in 14 days Mourinho’s team could be vulnerable.

This said, The Blues have shown this season, more than any other, they are the most resilient side in the league, never knowing when to give up, or when they are beaten.

Despite the busy fixture list Chelsea will draw confidence from the fact that they have an almost full quota of players to pick from, with only really Robben not available.

The betting sees Chelsea as the ½ favourites with the draw at 10/3 and West Ham around 25/4. Although this is short, and they are away from home it’s hard to see anything but another Chelsea win to keep the quad dream alive.

To further back up a Chelsea win, West Ham have lost the most home league games than any other team this season, while recent clashes between the pair have seen The Blues win the last four encounters.

But to me the best bet on the game looks to lie in the correct score market. In the league this campaign Chelsea have won an incredible 18 of their 23 games either 1-0 (9), 2-0 (5) or 3-0 (4). So, at 6/1, 6/1 and 11/1 respectively it’s possible to back all three outcomes for a profit using a sensible staking plan.

e.g. - £10 on 1-0 at 6/1 = £70 return
£10 on 2-0 at 6/1 = £70 return
£6 on 3-0 at 11/1 = £72 return

As you will see the total outlay is £26 with a potential return of around £70 (£44 profit), covering Chelsea to win 1-0, 2-0 and 3-0 (their most popular results in the league this season).
