Beckham and Best voted Kings but just who is the Queen of Old Trafford?

A recent poll carried out on www.characterchess.com, the website of the recently launched official Manchester United ‘Champions’ Chess Set, has revealed that David Beckham and George Best are the players most likely to fill the role of the King but the jury is still out on ‘who actually is the Queen?’

Each of the players featured in the collectable set, which boasts squad members from both their 1968 and 1999 European Cup victories, are mounted on interchangeable bases allowing the chess player to switch the team around and choose who plays where.

The poll asked the question “When playing Champions Chess, which players do you choose to be the King and the Queen on each team.”

David Beckham and George Best came out top of the list for the Kings but there was a three-way tie on the 1999 side and joint winners from the 1968 team, as to who should be the Queen. Roy Keane, Teddy Sherringham and Ryan Giggs received the same number of votes for the Champions League winners, whilst Dennis Law and Bobby Charlton were tied with 29% of the votes on the ’68 side.

A spokesman for Trademark Toys reported “When producing the Champions Chess Set, Trademark Toys and Manchester United representatives were unable to commit to the question of who should be the Queen, so we had to make the bases interchangeable.
We had are ideas as to who people would pick to be the most powerful player on the board but it looks as thought the jury is still out”
