AMATEUR GOLFERS GET CHANCE TO FOLLOW IN FOOTSTEPS OF GOLFING GREATS

Added: (Thu Jan 03 2008)

Amateur golfers in the UK could soon be following in the footsteps of the current Open Champion Padraig Harrington as well as the other golfing heroes like Colin Montgomerie and Tiger Woods by pitting themselves against this year’s Open Championship course at Royal Birkdale, following the launch of the inaugural People’s Open Golf Tournament.

The final of the People's Open Golf Tournament – which will be an annual event for amateur club golfers based on the same format faced by the sport’s top stars - will take place a month after the Open Championship at Royal Birkdale, following a series of regional and final qualifying tournaments around the UK in May and June.

A final week of qualifying will be held on leading courses in the Southport area with the final round at Royal Birkdale on August 21st. The Tournament is open to all amateur golfers who will be over the age of 18 by May 1st. Royal Birkdale has been the venue for eight Open Championships and two Ryder Cup tournaments.

During the regional events, competitors, male and female, will each play in a three-ball from the same tee. Ladies receive three courtesy shots, with scores calculated on a Stableford scoring system (3/4 of handicap), maximum 24. The top scorers from all the regional qualifying rounds will progress to a final week of qualifying at courses around the Southport area.

And, according to the event organiser, David Dryer, it could be a dream come true:

“If you’re a golfer, chances are you will have dreamt of playing in the Open Championship. The People’s Open Golf Tournament gives amateur golfers a chance to realise what could be an impossible dream by following in the spike marks of some of the game’s greatest heroes.”

Further information or to register, go to the Peoples Open Golf Tournament website www.pogt.co.uk and complete an application form. Alternatively, you can register via the POGT hotline on 08700 429737 (Calls cost 10p a minute). Successful applicants - on a first come first served basis - will receive an official booking form. An entry fee of £75 per player applies.
