Non-Electronic, Non-invasive and Entirely Voluntary there is a different way to help the elderly
The makers of iD-Everywhere have weighed into the debate about tagging the elderly. According to Science Minister, Malcolm Wicks, satellite technology, would enable those with dementia to have freedom to roam around their communities. But he said the idea could lead to claims of interference in peoples lives and permission would be needed.
Steve Shanks founder of iD-Everywhere, says there are alternatives to electronic tags. iD-everywhere is a low-cost, security service, that enables you to keep essential information on you in a way that is non-invasive and does not interfere with your right to privacy. The product, originally devised for sports people and back-pack travellers, is increasingly being taken up by the over 70s and their families.
Its a simple system. Subscribers visit www.iD-Everywhere.com. They buy an item that comes embossed with a unique Personal Identification Number your own safety pin. This PIN allows you to store information on a secure database. They chose the information they wish to store and password protection is available for anything that needs to be kept private.
Travellers might choose to store the contact details of their companions, passports, insurance details and itinery. The elderly might chose to store their home address, emergency contacts, medical conditions, name and address of doctors etc.
Information is carried by wearing the item with the PIN. iD-Everywhere merchandise comes in a variety of non-invasive formats including key-rings, multi-tags, and childrens wristbands, range from just 5 to 7.50 and include the data-base membership.
One iD-Everywhere wearer, Len, 75 says, When my daughter gave me the key-ring and put me on the database. I was initially sceptical. But she explained the data base was completely secure and anyway, I was only putting on the information that I chose to put on. It didnt take long to sort out and it gives her peace of mind, and knowing that shes got peace of mind is good for me too.
Founder Steve Shanks says, "Most of us feel uncomfortable with electronic tagging with its notions of control and big-brother state. iD-Everywhere doesnt have those negative sideeffect at all yet it achieves all the positive effects of tagging."
