INSPIRATIONAL AMPUTEE RUNS MARATHON
Abdifatah Dhuhulow should be an inspiration to us all. In 1991 he suffered a life threatening injury after civil war broke out in Somalia and subsequently had to have his leg amputated. However, now he is running marathons! Able Magazine talks to Abdi about his experiences.
Abdi arrived in the UK in 1998 as a refugee, at the time he had received minimal treatment for his leg injury as due to the war in Somalia there were no public health services. He received treatment to lengthen his leg in 1999 allowing him to stand up-right and walk unaided for the first time in eight years. However, problems soon occurred and in February 2004 Abdi had to make the difficult decision to have his leg amputated below the knee.
Abdi explains that this is the best decision he ever made and he was determined to resume his normal life. So, he joined a running group and was soon running competitively in races.
His ambition this year is to run the London Marathon in under three hours, although this may sound pretty ambitious Abdi now believes that he if puts it’s mind to it anything is achievable.
