The best type of garden is one that has depth, with tall plants at the back and shorter ones at the front.
The best type of garden is one that has depth, with tall plants at the back and shorter ones at the front. This kind of garden bed is much easier to look after than a long, narrow strip, which gives a great deal of work in weeding for a small return in flowers. But not all house blocks are big enough for a wide garden. In this case, you can add depth by covering the fence with a vine - as long as the neighbours are agreeable. If not, you can grow a vine on netting just inside the fence.
When first planting your garden, remember to prune properly in those first few years. This will give the proper shape and look to your garden for many years to come, especially where trees are concerned. A crooked tree is an eyesore forever.
When growing vines, make sure you know exactly how heavy they will be when fully grown. Wisterias may look light and delicate, but the fully-grown vine needs a very strong support. A weak, sagging support looks ugly and poses a risk of injury if it should collapse. While lots of one type of shrub or flower gives a great effect, you also need to choose enough variety of shrubs to give you plenty of colour year round. This need not be in flowers only, but can be found in leaf colour for the autumn and berries through the winter.
