Revenge, Justice or Treatment? Forensic Psychotherapy and the Criminal Law


International Association for Forensic Psychotherapy. Conference, St Catherine's College Oxford. Oxford 31st March to 1st April 2006.



For the first time the annual conference of the International Association for Forensic Psychotherapy. Conference is to be held in Oxford, England. The IAFP an organisation made up of professionals across disciplines dedicated to working psychotherapeutically with offender patients and with the systems they are placed in. Members of the Association across the world work in some of the most challenging situations concerning serious crime and disordered personalities. Delegates from across the world will be gathering to discuss treatment methods, ethical issues and other matters related to public health and protection. A distinguished panel of main stage speakers will be delivering the keynote addresses throughout the two days.



Keynote Speakers


Dr Heather Strang is a criminologist and Director of the Centre for Restorative Justice in the Research School of Social Sciences at the Australian National University. Over the past five years she has directed the Reintegrative Shaming Experiments (RISE), investigating the effectiveness of restorative conferencing as an alternative to normal criminal justice processing of offenders.



Professor Nigel Eastman is Professor of Law & Ethics in Psychiatry at St George's University of London



Alan Corbett is National Clinical Director of CARI (Children at Risk in Ireland) which is a national charity providing therapy and other support to children and families affected by sexual abuse



Baroness Helena Kennedy QC has spent her professional life giving voice to those who have least power within the system, championing civil liberties and promoting human rights. She has used many public platforms - including the House of Lords, to which she was appointed in 1997 - to argue for social justice with passion, wit and humanity. She has also written and broadcast on a wide range of issues, from medical negligence to the rights of women and children.



Dr. Viveca Hazboun is an adult and child psychiatrist. She is the Director of the Guidance and Training Centre for the Child and Family in Bethlehem.



Professor James Gilligan, MD is a renowned expert on violence and violence prevention . He is currently a Visiting Professor of Psychiatry and Social Policy at the University of Pennsylvania and soon will be directing a research center at the University devoted to the study and prevention of violence. He is also Distinguished Visiting Scholar and Adjunct Professor at New York University. He is a former member of the Department of Psychiatry at Harvard Medical School.



Dr Felicity De Zulueta is a consultant psychiatrist in psychotherapy heading the Traumatic Stress Service in the Maudsley Hospital, London and a Honorary Senior Clinical Lecturer in Traumatic Studies at the Institute of Psychiatry.
