There's no doubt about it, termites are a pest in Australia, causing over $700 million in damage to homes every year. A professional pest controller should inspect every home annually, with the owner keeping an eagle eye out for signs in between times. Much can be done to discourage termites from entering a home apart from the chemical barrier that should be in place.

Do not allow any timber from fences or any other source to rest up against the walls or foundations of the home. This will give a bridge for those pesky little critters to access the yummy timber that is keeping your home together. New timber should not be stored under the house. Gardens - especially if they contain wood chips - should not be made close to the walls of the home.

The owner should make sure that any water run-off is directed well away from around the house, because termites love wet conditions. Water run-off can also dilute the chemical barrier in the soil. Examine the weepholes - slots in the brick that let out excess moisture. These are commonly used by termites to get into homes. If the slot appears to be filled with sawdust or dirt, then suspect termites - and call your pest inspector immediately.
