¡§WIDGET¡¨ WOWS WORLD
After 25 years, countless prototypes and £5 million of research, Guinness pleased drinkers the world over by creating a ¡§pub-in-a-bottle¡¨, patenting their first ¡§widget¡¨ with The UK Patent Office 15 years ago on 29 November 1985.
The ¡§widget¡¨ allowed buyers to enjoy a bottled drink with the same thick, creamy head they had grown used to drinking only in pubs and bars.
The inventors Alan Forage and William Byrne placed a small pod into the bottom of a can, added a small amount of nitrogen and sealed the contents, forcing a tiny amount of the drink into the pod. When the can is opened, the contents of the pod are forced out and rise through the drink mixing with the nitrogen to create the familiar and long-lasting Guinness head.
Other brewers have since come up with their own ¡§widgets¡¨ and the idea was introduced to draught beer in 1992, lager in 1994 and cider in 1997.
