OPENSPECTRUM WIKI FEATURED IN CURRENT ISSUE OF SCIENCE

Providence, RI June 24, 2005 -- OpenSpectrum
OpenSpectrum, the Wiki recently launched by The Science of Spectroscopy, is featured in the current issue of Science. This is the second time The Science of Spectroscopy has been published in Science, and may be the first time a Wiki has received mention in the journal’s 125 year history.

The feature, in the journal’s NetWatch section, will help attract college faculty to use OpenSpectrum, which allows any user to contribute material and edit the web site. OpenSpectrum shows students, through their own participation on the Wiki, how scientists develop new knowledge, share it at conferences and meetings, and build on each others’ work.

The feature is available on the Science web site at: http://www.sciencemag.org/cgi/reprint/308/5730/1847e.pdf

The project is available on the web at http://www.scienceofspectroscopy.info

Funded by NASA through its National Space Grant College and Fellowship Program since 1999, The Science of Spectroscopy focuses on rethinking how spectroscopy is taught in undergraduate chemistry courses and has resulted in a Web-based curriculum tool that is used and recognized internationally. In 2002, the project expanded its education reach with the release of "Seeing The Scientific Light" a companion documentary which has aired on PBS Arizona and is currently in retail distribution; and in 2005 the project added OpenSpectrum, a Wiki-based learning tool for spectroscopy that anyone can edit.
