The Science of Spectroscopy aims to build community, expand knowledge with "anyone can edit" Wiki technology
Providence, RI April 27, 2005 -- OpenSpectrum
The Science of Spectroscopy announces the release of OpenSpectrum, a Wiki-based digital library which transforms the popular Web site into a community-supported education resource. The Wiki allows any user to contribute material and edit the web site, and all education material is now available in French, as well as English, to serve the significant Canadian and French user base of the web site.
Why is The Science of Spectroscopy doing this?
This project aims to build on the success of The Science of Spectroscopy in its first five years. OpenSpectrum:
• Sparks an imaginative new era in which any user, regardless of technical ability, can contribute materials to the site
• Embodies the idea that building a network of people is critical for the long-term and sustainable success of technology in teaching and learning
• Makes the web site more personally relevant to the needs of teachers and students, broader in the scope of topics it covers and stronger from the information provided by its community

Funded by NASA through its National Space Grant College and Fellowship Program since 1999, The Science of Spectroscopy focuses on rethinking how spectroscopy is taught in undergraduate chemistry courses and has resulted in a Web-based curriculum tool that is used and recognized internationally. In 2002, the project expanded its education reach with the release of "Seeing The Scientific Light" a companion documentary which has aired on PBS Arizona and is currently in retail distribution.
