Online auctions are traditionally where you'd expect to browse and purchase collectables, antiques, computer related items, films, CD's and just about anything else, except that is, for DNA paternity tests!
And you certainly wouldn't expect to buy one from the Bloke in the Pub! But that's exactly where you'll find them, as a DNA testing company has listed 100 paternity tests for sale in a dutch (multiple quantity) auction.
The Bloke in the Pub (www.theblokeinthepub.co.uk) is a fast-growing UK person-to-person online auction, where registered users can easily add their own auctions and sell goods from the comfort of their own homes.
Online auctions are big business and the thrill of waiting for bids to be placed, and then watching the price increase as bidders compete, is one of the reasons that people prefer it in comparison to static classified ad's.
Auction fever seems to be sweeping the UK both online and offline, witness the growth in popularity of BBC's daytime series, Bargain Hunt (set to go out on prime time) and the ever increasing number of new users of Internet auctions. Online auctions provide sellers with an international platform from which they can sell goods, and buyers with a wide choice of items to browse and buy.
Dave Carter, a director of The Bloke in the Pub Ltd. comments, "We expect the odd unusual auction to pop up now and again, but DNA paternity tests?.. even the Bloke is in a state of shock! However, over 100,000 DNA tests were carried out by UK residents seeking to resolve paternity disputes in the last year, so I guess its a valid service".
The Bloke in the Pub is developing something of a cult following and has a vibrant community of active users. This will allow experienced auction users to have a say in the long-term development of the self-styled 'People's Auction'. The Bloke in the Pub Auction was started in August 2001. Since then it has developed it's operating software to the point where it now has all the features that the large online auctions such as eBay have. It will soon offer auctions in multi-currency to allow users from the US, UK and Europe to integrate seamlessly.
Online auctions are built on trust and feedback (sometimes referred to as ratings) and, as each successful transaction is concluded, both buyer and seller can leave eachother a feedback comment. A user's list of feedbacks is accessible to all other users and this helps by giving potential bidders confidence.
