Biologists predicts Mosquito problems this summer due to wet weather

Hannah Wallace, Company Biologist for Microbee Pest Control Services warns that the weather this year is likely to promote greater than usual mosquito populations.
Hannah is managing a long-term study of lake and pond insect species. She warns that the warm spring coupled with frequent rainfall has created conditions under which mosquitoes flourish.
As a pest control company we have noticed an increase in mosquito problems and complaints. The UK at present has 33 recorded mosquito species. One of the main nuisance species is Culex pipiens; this species is most active in the evening and is often responsible for bites picked up during summer activities such as barbecues.
There are concerns that human habits could provide mosquitoes with greater breeding potential and targeting public awareness is an important part of dealing with potential mosquito nuisances.
So how can you stop mosquitoes breeding in your garden?
h They like stagnant water with an organic content, such as dead leaves
h Rain water butts should be covered with a close fitting lid.
h Keep gutters and flat roofs clear of debris like leaves and moss to prevent pools of water forming.
h Change the water in birdbaths and under plant pots weekly.
h Buckets and other containers that could collect and hold rainwater should be left upside down.
h Recycle any used bottles, containers or tyres around your property to stop rain water collecting in them.
h Garden ponds need primary predators like goldfish to eat mosquito eggs and larvae.
Hannah says Climate change predictions have worried some. The current weather pattern is favouring breeding. It may mean that the UK will have a more favourable environment for mosquitoes, including non- native, disease-carrying species already sighted on the Continent. This underlines the importance of continual mosquito monitoring programs in this country.
Microbee is a long established and experienced pest control company and one of the few pest control companies in the UK dealing with mosquitoes by both monitoring populations and carrying out treatments to decrease numbers.
