Sir Bob Geldof for Honarary Patron

Added: (Wed Aug 11 2004)

Press Release

For Immediate use: 10th August 2004

Sir Bob Geldof has agreed to be Honorary Patron to Grandparents Apart Self Help Groups Scotland.

Sir Bob has been campaigning for fathers to have equal contact with their children, he spoke on the telephone to Jimmy Deuchars of Grandparents Apart on Friday 30th July to talk about the groups work with grandparents. The groups have been supporting grandparents separated from their grandchildren, and trying to bring grandparents more into the family unit, since the 1989 children's act left them out in the cold, deriving the grandchildren of their experience and love, and leaving the children open to "Alienation" (abuse) in family arguments.

The groups have been invited to the Scottish Parliament meeting of the new Scottish Family Law Proposals, and proposed Family Centres where Contact/ Mediation/ Education could be used to help bring families together again.

We have also spoken in Westminster in support of the Equal Parenting Council of which we are a member. On 12th July this year we were invited to the Conservative Summit in Westminster for the creation of a new post of Family Minister for Theresa May MP.
The Conservative Party have pledged their full support of Presumption of contact for alienated parents and grandparents.

NB The 1089 children's act was slated at the time of creation by MPs as not being thought out properly in the first place.
