PANGAEA - Bringing cult to kids, Raimi style

Since the completion of their successful TV advertising campaign for US glazing consortium CityGlass Inc., Exeter based PANGAEA are now adding the finishing touches to a TV commercial for the ‘Gladiator’ - half BMX, half skateboard and the latest fad for kids. OLOP Leisure’s Xmas unveiling will hit the nations high street in November preceded by the release of the ad.
The one-day shoot took place in the picturesque Victoria Park, Paington, Devon. The location lent itself to the compositional style of the ad, and was specifically picked for its diverse range of flora and winding pathways. PANGAEA director Karl Lear set out to recreate a Sam Raimi feel to the whole piece. While the cult 80’s spoof-horror director’s Evil Dead would not seem the ideal basis for what is essentially a children’s ad, the gamble paid off. Combining a hero story narrative with outrageous crash zooms, fast-paced editing, and the tribute one-liner ‘Groovy’, PANGAEA have shaped a mould-breaking approach to teen-targeted advertising. “I hope others will take notice and get away from the brainwashing ‘in-your-face’ approach to daytime children’s advertising. While I am not condoning anyone under-age renting out Sam Raimi horror movies,” said Karl “there is a lot to be said for his unique style, especially when applied to TV commercials. The fast paced retro-humour really lends itself to a simple narrative tale.”
Teaming PANGAEA up again with special effects outfit Optical Art & Recreation’s Les Street (Event Horizon), the two companies are fast forming a strong production partnership and sound understanding of one another’s strengths. PANGAEA’s Art Director Glen Lear added, “the Southwest is fast becoming the place to be for our industry, we are forming bonds with companies and freelancers in all creative fields.” The rapidly expanding City of Exeter will soon have its own studio complex to rival the set-up at Pinewood.
Combined with an Iggy Pop styled soundtrack from the same era the Gladiator Ad will be broadcast mid-November.
