Pressbox (Press Release) -
Robert Carlyle, celebrated Scottish actor and star of Trainspotting, Hamish MacBeth & The Full Monty, has signed up to be in the first in a trio of Scottish single films commissioned by BBC 1 Scotland & Scottish Screen.
Machine Productions will shoot ZIG ZAG LOVE in and around Glasgow in October 2008. A story of ‘first lust and last chances', a boy and girl hit the road in search of adventure, fun and freedom. For film director, Gillies Mackinnon, it’s a return home after many years filming away from Scotland.
“The script was so good that it immediately attracted the very best of Scottish talent to us”, said Jane Dauncey, producer.
Robert Carlyle plays JACKO, the rakish father of a boy with cancer, PETER, played by Anthony Martin (River City). Cara Readle (Tracy Beaker) plays ZIGGY - a rebellious girl with mild cerebral palsy and Mark Lewis Jones plays her father, PAUL. Joe McFadden cameos as DR DAN PEMBERTON and newcomer Kevin Mains plays ELLIOT, Peter’s best friend.
Machine Productions was formed by Bafta award winning producers Jane Steventon and Jane Dauncey with the aim of producing drama outside London.
Zig Zag Love is written by Scottish writer Mary Morris (Tracy Beaker, The Movie of Me, Bels Boys).
MARY MORRIS QUOTES:
“ I'm always inspired by characters who would be very ordinary if their circumstances didn't force them to be extraordinary.”
“ I grew up in the North West Highlands in a village that surrounded an Aluminum factory and it has influenced me hugely- all that beauty and romance in the landscape and cradled within it a colony of tough, sarcastic, financially challenged, hard working people (well, that was my family anyway). Small hard lives in a big landscape. Living a small life made you want drama and the landscape made you believe it was possible, if only you could find it or make it. I was such a drama queen of a child.”
Director Gillies MacKinnon made his name with films such as Hideous Kinky starring Kate Winslet, Regeneration and the Glasgow-set Small Faces.
Andrea Calderwood is Executive Producer. As a Producer and Executive Producer, Andrea Calderwood has specialized in breakthrough drama around the world, from Lynne Ramsey’s Ratcatcher to Kevin McDonald’s The Last King of Scotland to HBO’s Generation Kill. She established Slate North to specifically develop new drama from Scotland.
ANDREA CALDERWOOD QUOTE:
“I am very proud to be associated with Zig Zag Love. Single drama has always been a strength of the BBC's, providing a platform for new talent, and providing the audience with bold, surprising and entertaining drama - and Zig Zag Love is all of that.””
Machine Productions was set-up in March 2008 by Jane Dauncey (In The Company of Strangers, Casualty, Tracy Beaker’s Movie of Me, Roman Mysteries) and Jane Steventon (Kiss of Death, Casualty, Tracy Beaker) and is a Cardiff-based independent production company. Machine are currently in development on two projects for ITV1, including a 3-parter ‘Map of Love’ written by Barbara Machin (creator of Waking the Dead) and an innovative new children’s series for Five.
