Comfort in numbers with Emerald’s COUNTER compliant reports
UK, 1 March 2004 - Leading international publisher Emerald, becomes one of a select band of publishers to be COUNTER compliant, meeting the international code of practice for reports that allow clients to measure the usage of online information products and services in a more consistent way.
“We are one of the first publishers to gain COUNTER status, so it’s a tremendous achievement,” said Paul Evans, Head of Electronic Marketing & Support Services “At Emerald we see it as our mission to increase the quality of our service offering. This includes the ‘stickiness’ of our site. In doing this, we are able to help librarians to assess the usage of their quality digital resources.
“Usage as one of the most important areas of data within our company and we can measure variables ranging from numbers of abstracts or articles viewed to overall usage trends and customer value for money. Sharing these statistics with librarians can help them make decisions about their stock and accurately target the marketing of their library resources to key user groups."
Bill Russell, Sales and Marketing Director at Emerald, adds; “Encouraging e-journal usage is crucial. There is still a real need for validated, peer-reviewed information and the advent of the Internet hasn’t changed that, but perhaps made those quality resources more difficult to identify.”
Emerald provides a range of quality information products including over 150 hard copy and online journals on the subjects of management and Library & Information services; plus Emerald Fulltext, a database of 45,000 plus Emerald articles.
Peter Shepherd, Project Director at Project Counter, said, “The use of online information resources is growing exponentially and it has been widely agreed (by the producers and purchasers of this information) that the use of these resources should be measured in a more consistent way.
“We are delighted that Emerald are now implementing the code of practice and hope that it will encourage even more publishers to do the same. Librarians want to understand better how the information they buy from a variety of sources is being used; publishers want to know how the information products they disseminate are being accessed. An essential requirement of meeting these objectives is an agreed international Code of Practice governing the recording and exchange on online usage data.”
The importance of COUNTER to the publishing industry is shown by its discussion being given prominent slots at the upcoming UK Serials Group conference (UMIST, Manchester, March 2004).
