Public Relations Standards Council launches "Accountability Checklist” at PR Showcase 2000"
The final draft of the "Accountability Checklist" developed by the Public Relations Standards Council is to be launched at this years PR Showcase (Royal Horticultural Halls, London, 21-22 November). Copies will be available for delegates and visitors, who will be invited to add their comments and opinions to the document before its official publication.
The checklist looks at the responsibility ands accountability of those who head the Public Relations function within organisations and those external professionals who provide both advice and service to such organisations. This checklist is believed to be the first in the world to look at Public Relations accountability and responsibility. It has particular relevance at a time when the government and trade and professional bodies are looking at corporate responsibility and the quality of company management of risk, relationships and reputation.
On the understanding that Public Relations is strategic in that it must have an influence upon policy, the “Accountability Checklist” has been prepared to help managers and commentators identify whether an organisation has public relations operating at a strategic level and with appropriate supporting resources. It is designed to be a useful guide for public relations professionals, Chief Executives and those who comment on the performance of organisations such as analysts, MPs, professional bodies, government departments, pressure groups and others.
Bodies that contributed to the document include the Central Office of Information, the Chartered Institute of Marketing, the Confederation of British Industry and leading business universities. The draft is on circulation and has attracted comment and endorsement from professionals in major companies, academia, the media and government. It is due to be published in a final version to incorporate such comments early in the new year.
RJA Events Ltd, organisers of PR Showcase, have donated space to the PRSC to help them in the launch of the new “Accountability Checklist”. PR Showcase is now the UK’s biggest PR event, with an estimated 1500 delegates attending the comprehensive seminar programme.
