SECRETS TO PATENT SEARCH SUCCESS TO BE UNVEILED

Added: (Tue Oct 02 2001)

Thorough patent searches can save businesses money in the long-run and make them more competitive in the market-place, according to Peter Slater of The Patent Office.

Companies in Europe are estimated to waste £20 billion each year repeating work, much of which has already been patented.

Peter Slater, Assistant Director, Head of the Search and Advisory Service, will be talking about the value of patent searches at a public seminar on 16 October at the EPIDOS and PATINNOVA patents and innovation conference held from 15 – 18 October at the Cardiff International Arena.

Mr Slater says: “Patent searches are useful in so many ways. You can find out if you’re in danger of duplicating work that’s already been carried out. You can also problem-solve by sourcing a company that has developed a technology that you need.”

Patent searches are also good for improving your market awareness and keeping a firm eye on your competitors.

Mr Slater says: “Over 40 million patents are published around the world so keeping an eye on the information that’s out there can help you judge markets, plan how to stay ahead of competitors and indicate the potential market value of your own work.”

The EPIDOS and PATINNOVA conference will highlight topical issues in patents, trade marks and design registration to decision-makers in industry, government, legal firms and universities.
The themes for the public seminars are Industrial Property: A Reward for Original Thinking and Patents & Money: Using Patents to Increase R&D Efficiency, Reduce Development Costs and Improve Competitiveness.

Tickets for the public seminars are available price £10 (including buffet lunch). For more information about how to attend the seminars, please visit www.patinnova.org.
