Online divorce has been with us since September 1999, so it is hardly a new phenomonon, but compared with the high street it is still a cottage industry.
Divorce-Online has dealt with over 35,000 individual divorce petitions since 1999 an average therefore of 5,000 a year, or just under 3% of all divorces granted in 2004 (last year of official figures from the ONS).
The vast majority of divorces are not contested. They may not be entirely amicable but they are not contested and do not need the expense of hiring Solicitors to be dealt with.
The average uncontested divorce fee for a Solicitor to deal with it is in the region of £855.00. It is more expensive in the South East than in the North.
Divorce-Online has two services to assist the divorce client, a DIY package which is £55.00 (£800.00) cheaper and a managed service which costs £165.00. With both services, we complete the documents for all stages and provide guidance by e-mail, sms, post etc. However with the managed services, we also deal with the court and all the actual filing and timetable.
We are not Solicitors but as Certified Paralegals we are subject to continuing education in our area of legal practice and have to have indemnity insurance to comply with our rules as Certified Paralegals.
Why is it so cheap compared to high street Solicitors? Technology, technology, technology is the answer. We use our own in house software and systems that enables us to efficiently process hundreds of documents without the overheads of a Solicitors office. We don't need secretaries and plush offices to do our job (although the office is actually quite nice and because we don't charge by the hour it is not in our interests to make things last longer.
So in a nutshell we urge anybody thinking about filing for a divorce to get advice but then use us to impliment the divorce and any financial agreement as once you have reached agreement with legal advice you don't need the lawyer to put it into effect.
