Making a Will for charity

Added: (Fri Oct 23 2009)

Burnetts Solicitors will be supporting nine of the UK's best loved charities this November when it participates in the national Will Aid campaign.

The Carlisle law firm is giving local people the opportunity to have their Will professionally drawn up (or amended) and will not be earning a penny.

To raise as much money as possible for Will Aid, Burnetts’ three strong team of wills advisers will be drawing up basic Wills and, in return, asking that the will-maker makes a donation to the Will Aid charities instead of paying Burnetts.

The suggested donation level is £75 for a single Will, £110 for a pair of Wills or £40 for a codicil to an existing Will. Will Aid is a campaign run by nine of the UK's best known charities: ActionAid, British Red Cross, Christian Aid, Help the Aged, NSPCC, Save the Children UK, Sight Savers International, SCIAF (Scotland) and Trocaire (N. Ireland).

Emma Williams is a solicitor in Burnetts’ Wills and Trusts team. She said, “Making a Will is a straightforward, simple and an important way of protecting family and loved ones in the future. Even so fewer than half of people have made one. It can take years to sort out someone's estate if they die without a Will, leaving their nearest and dearest in great distress. We hope that local people will take advantage of Will Aid to look after their families whilst helping us raise money for Will Aid charities.”

Will Aid has raised more £7 million in donations and very much more in legacies since its launch in 1988. The last campaign in 2008 raised over £900,000 in donations and a further £5.3 million in legacies.
