Fake Identity Card Ring Busted in Puerto Rico

Pressbox (Press Release) - Fifty people have been arrested in connection with conspiring to sell fake identities of Puerto Ricans to immigrants in the US. This is thought to be the largest immigration fake identity fraud case ever in the USA according to the US authorities. It is thought that hundreds of social security numbers, birth certificates and fake driving licenses have been sold for anything up to $2,500 a set. A large percentage of the fake identity documents are legitimate but have been obtained fraudulently.

The fake identity gang had suppliers, brokers and runners; they used code to place orders using the word Skirt when referring to a female and pants when referring to a male customer. They also used clothes sizes to refer to age and what fake identity cards were required. The suppliers in Puerto Rico sent the documents via express post to the USA. They were sending the fake identities to people in over 15 US states that included Florida, Texas and Ohio. The suppliers went as far as to offer an exchange of fake identities if the client was not satisfied. It is not yet clear how much money has been made from the fake identities.

Officials at ICE are still dealing with the investigation but so far over 80 per cent of the fake identities have been sold by the Puerto Ricans who´s names appeared on them. The documentation was then used to apply for fake driving license and fake passports. Puerto Ricans are used for this type of fake identity fraud as they are US citizens but have Hispanic names and surnames.

Another twenty warrants have been sent out to do with a similar case. The outcome has been a success from seventy suspects they have sixty one arrested. This whole investigation started off with a tip off with the investigation going for two years. Thousands of Puerto Ricans become victims of fake identity theft thanks to the government not keeping secure copies of their birth certificates. New birth certificates with security features have been introduced but it is unknown if this has made a difference. If the suspects are convicted they could face up to fifteen years in prison for identity fraud.
