We want more than peanuts

The Monkey’s are revolting

We have all heard the stories of massive increases in online advertising spend and long may they continue. It makes a welcome change from the doom and gloom merchants that peddle healthy doses of cynicism to make sure we don’t start enjoying ourselves again. But for many media owners the hype today is as real and elusive as it was in the 90’s. Sure online ad spend is increasing but as always it is out of the reach of the small and the needy, and when it does come within their grasp, what is there left to chew on? Nothing! The truth is small sites running banners for big companies are getting paid peanuts and being treated like monkeys.

Well a Sussex based company wants to change all that. WWW.Blankspace.co.uk is the brainchild of MD Nick York and fellow director Ian Highland, “Like all good things in life the idea is a simple and effective one, bring the buyers and sellers of online adspace together, get rid of the middle man and let the market decide the value of the space involved”.

Operating along similar lines to the internationally acclaimed ebay, it allows media owners to sell web advertising space by auction or ‘buy it now’ prices. It provides a boost to owners of websites forced to sell space through syndicates or by banner swapping, by increasing the value of their space and ultimately delivering greater profit.

"Lots of sites aren't big enough to interest the big advertisers and have limited options for selling ad space, ultimately they get a very low rate for their traffic. We hope to enable them to increase the value of their space and boost revenue." says York.

It works equally well for media buyers, who can target specific sites and buy slots at prices they can afford. They can also do it when they want and without the mention of minimum monthly spends. “The web has embraced auction style sites, ultimately it delivers the perfect environment for buyers and sellers to meet, it also gives our media owners the recognition and revenue they rightly deserve” says York
Online ad revenue has grown more than fourfold since 2000, said the Interactive Advertising Bureau (IAB). The online advertising spend for 2004 is estimated to reach £653.3m ($1.23bn) a 60% rise on the previous year's £407.8m figure.
This represented 3.9% of the total spent by advertisers, slightly more than the 3.8% share that went to radio. Music to the ears of the traders on Blankspace.co.uk no doubt!
