VPS or Dedicated Server? – Different Web Hosting Servers Explained
There are several web hosting servers available in the market including shared hosting, dedicated server hosting and Virtual Server (VPS) hosting. But before deciding which one is right for you, it is important to know what each one of them does and how they differ from one another. There are several parameters where you can differentiate one from the other such as the cost of the hosting, privacy, operating system and control.
The best option for web hosting for any website can be defined as the one that fulfills all technical hosting needs. And for this to happen, you need to know all available server options, specific requirements of your website and your budget for renting web servers. Cost is the major factor that differentiates dedicated hosting from virtual private hosting and shared server hosting. Also you need to know a little bit about different operating systems such as Linux and Windows for web hosting services. Different web servers are explained below in detail.
Dedicated Server: This is the preferred solution for most website owners after outgrowing from shared servers. However this is not ideal choice for all small or developing websites. Dedicated hosting servers are the best for the well established and high traffic website. The great thing about this type of server is that you own the entire server with full control to operate it. If you are getting masses of traffic to your site with lots of content to publish then this is the ideal choice for you. However, the cost of this server is very high and you need to have a dedicated person also to handle all technical requirements, as there is often little technical support provided by the dedicated server resellers.
Virtual Private Server: This is often the ideal choice when you are looking to upgrade your hosting from a shared server. VPS hosting provides you with the root level access of the server at a very similar price to a shared server, but with the many advantages of a dedicated server. There are different VPS servers available in the market based on the operating system they run. Windows VPS and Linux VPS are the core ones; under Linux there are numerous sub-choices of configuration. A virtual server acts as a dedicated hosting server but instead of having a full dedicated server, you own some part of it including CPU, storage space, RAM etc by creating layers within the main server. These layers ensure confidentiality and security of resources amongst the other virtual hosts on the same server. This virtualisation creates the environment inside server to provide a similar service to dedicated hosting. It helps to reduce the cost of hosting and gives the best service when compared to shared servers and at a very similar price to that of a shared server.
Shared Server: This is by and large the most cost effective and most basic option for web hosting, mostly preferred by small website and blog operators having less traffic and lesser content. Since you are sharing your resources with a few other websites, there could be some operational restrictions and limitations. But the simple operation and reliability of shared servers makes it preferable for smaller websites.
However, out of all of these options VPS hosting is the most preferred hosting now days. It comes with multiple advantages like cost effectiveness, dedicated control, customizable resource requirements and better integration with PHP, MySql and Perl. A Linux virtual private server also has an advantage of enhanced administration control and improved function against malware and spam.
