UK Grid sees high demand for Data Centre space in its new facility in Manchester

UK Grid, one of the largest Internet and Colocation providers in Manchester, has seen a high demand for colocation space in its new Data Centre, 1 Synergy House, which opened for business in Q1 of this year.
The 7000 sqft facility is located on Manchester Science Park, which forms the main hub of the Internet in Manchester and boasts the best available Internet connectivity in the North West.
Patrick Doyle, the Technical director of UK Grid states "We have firm orders for 25% of the ground floor despite only being operational since Q1 of 2008. Due to the lack of quality Data Centre space in Manchester, demand is very high. Almost all of the other similar facilities in Manchester are completely full now. We are planning on opening the top floor earlier than expected and are now quite far down the line with plans to open a 2nd facility nearby. We are also actively trying to bring more tier1 carriers to the area. Recently we completed the installation of Cogent Communications Manchester fibre network connecting the global tier1 provider to the main Data Centres in Manchester, shortly we hope to be announcing the arrival of another major tier1 provider to the facility!"
Synergy House provides tier II data centre space and has a current capacity for 300 racks. The facility has its own HV supply and substation with backup Generators able to take the full load of the building should a mains power failure occur. Chloride energy efficient UPS systems provide N+1 uninterruptible power, and N+1 cooling is provided by Airedale HVAC systems.
The facility has an FM200 and VESDA fire detection and suppression system.
In an effort to reduce the carbon foot print of the facility, UK Grid has opted to use Cold Aisle Containment to reduce the amount of power required for Cooling, and has deployed a near unity UPS system.
A carrier neutral facility, 1 Synergy House is connected via a dark fibre ring which enables customers to benefit from a great choice of connectivity with
tier1 and tier2 bandwidth, dark fibre, Metro and layer2 long reach services into London.
