Added: (Tue Nov 10 2009)

Using the electoral roll to find people online is simple and cost effective. There are lots of sites and organizations that will carry out this service for you or alternatively you can buy the edited electoral roll for that year for around £250, so really it depends on whether you are carrying out a one off electoral roll search or if you are wanting to use the electoral roll on a much more frequent basis that will determine how you go about electoral roll online.

You can use the electoral roll to search by name or by name and area; this gives you a chance to narrow down popular names to a particular area of the country.

For example you may conduct a search for John Smith in the UK, this will bring back a long list of matches so you may want to search for John Smith in particular street, postcode or village, the electoral roll will let you do this.

About the Electoral Roll

The electoral roll also known as the electoral register or the voters roll includes the names and addresses of the majority of UK citizens over the age of 18. Since 2003 the published electoral roll has been edited as people can now remove themselves from it. This has damaged some companies who do not have access to other data points, these companies are now finding that they have less data to sell to their customers; not surprisingly they do not advertise this fact so always use a company that collects their data for their online people searches from various sources. 2002 was the last year that the full electoral roll was made available; again make sure the company you use has access to historical records as they can provide data of the full records to 2002. The electoral roll is just one way of finding people online, there are lots of other systems that can be used, this is why it is important to use a company that has access to other systems such as Royal Mail PAF file or Royal Mail address finder, BT Osis file and the consented numbers file.

The current electoral roll is published in again in early 2010 and is updated quarterly.

Finding people using the electoral roll can be fun and easy to do, if you need constant access then you can buy an electoral roll package for around £250, if you don’t and only need one or two searches doing make sure you use a reputable company as there are many companies that only have limited databases.

The register is compiled for each polling district, and held by the electoral registration office. In England and Wales this office is located at the local council (district, borough, or unitary level). In Scotland, the offices are sometimes located with councils, but may also be separate. Northern Ireland has a central Electoral Office run by the government.

Good Luck with your online electoral roll searches.
