The pluses and minuses

Google is the most powerful search engine in the world and creating a social / business / family network called Google+ is
bound to affect the thinking of the average E-commerce agency in London. The tendency is that every client should have a presence on all the leading social networking platforms as every website designer knows that link building is the key to driving customers to a website. However, Google+ is different: because Google is so powerful, there is a feeling that, whatever PR Google puts out to the contrary, Google will favour organizations that have circles of friends on Google+ above the other business networks such as Linked-In.

Fear is the key

The internet instils high levels of fear like no other unseen body; people are genuinely distressed if they cannot get on-line; they are genuinely distressed if there is a new development and they are not part of it. Facebook was once for students now grown-ups have pages; in fact, every organization worth a handful of pixels has a Facebook page – and Google doesn’t like it because Google doesn’t like anything that is not Google; the search engine either buys its competition or destroys it by placing it on a Google blacklist that nobody can see.

Google is the internet monster that fuels the fear and its new privacy policy is simply adding to a climate where people will find that their thoughts and desires are entirely reflected in Google’s on-line mirror. Of course, many Google+ users will simply regard it as another form of networking but, unlike Facebook, it is possible to separate friends, colleagues and family within different circles and only one person, you, hold all the knowledge... plus Google, of course.

Google is all about money and everything you do on Google will be noted and appropriate Ads will no doubt pop up at the most inappropriate moment, especially if you share a family computer. For example, a friend sends you a link to an outrageous video on You Tube – does that mean that you wish to buy outrageous products? Of course not, but Google has that information stored away.

Google+ is just another way for Google to punch Facebook on the nose and to control even more of the world-wide-web. It is a power that dwarfs the reach of Rupert Murdoch and Sky TV but it is not real. A flick of the switch and Google’s power has gone for, without electricity, Google doesn’t exist but people, buildings, things we can touch most certainly do.

Your personal digital agency in London will no doubt be worshipping at Google’s altar because we are all tempted by the easy search click; but Google+ is as disappointing as it is clever because it is powered by Google and attracts subscribers not through desire to be part of a new circle of friends or colleagues but through fear that if you are not part of Google Plus, you will be a Google Minus in the all seeing eye of the Google search engine.

Calm down dear

An E-commerce digital web design London based agency that is developing a web design strategy will not wish to ignore the possible value of Google+ but a truly diligent website designer knows that converting traffic to custom is nothing to do with Google+ and all to do with the quality of the web design, good content and the price of the products on offer. Instructions to your E-commerce agency in London should be that the agency focuses first on creating a brilliant online E-commerce store and second that wherever the marketing is directed that it is people not Google that matter most.
