Gap Year in Australia Becomes More Popular

Added: (Tue Mar 21 2006)

Australian travel specialist Oz Talk can confirm that gap years in Australia are even more popular than they used to be. Traditionally the preserve of students, this long holiday Down Under is now increasingly popular among the 25-35 age range – with 90 000 such people taking a gap year in 2005.

Kane Gordon, General Manager of Oz Talk, thinks the phenomenon has different reasons: “The gap year is still popular amongst students, but tuition fees are making some people think twice. These older travellers are more financially secure, but still at a stage in their career when they can take a year out.”

Chris Forde, Sales Manager at Oz Talk, sees a different reason: “I’m Australian, and I can see that the Brits work much longer hours than many others in Europe. They just need a rest and time out to think. Life’s too short to work yourself into an early grave.”

Australia remains the most popular destination for gap years, partly because there is so much to see and do there, and because the transport links are so good. With a good travel package, it’s possible to fill the year with a lifetime of travel experience. Plus, with the new Internet travel experts like Oz Talk, Australia is no longer an expensive destination.
