Dot Com Shortage? What Shortage?

London, UK, 1 December 2000 - A new study reveals that the alleged shortage of .com names may not be nearly as bad as claimed by some observers.

Recent Internet news has been filled with ICANN's (International Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers) decision to add 7 new top level domains (.biz, .info, .name, .pro, .museum, .aero and .coop). In particular, .biz and .info are being suggested as viable alternatives to .com.

"We surveyed over 300,000 possible .com names, all consisting of common words or combination of words, with no misspellings or hyphens - and over 60% of the names we looked at were simply not registered by anybody", said Sunil Tanna of Answers 2000. "The advantages of sticking to a dot com are obvious: for the vast majority of web surfers, dot com is the Internet."

The surprising results of this survey, including every single unregistered name that was located, are now available, free, online at www.domaincavern.com.

News of this shocking survey spread rapidly on the Internet grapevine. Within hours of opening, the domaincavern.com site experienced a flood of traffic, including both curiosity seekers, and those seeking to find a good unregistered domain name.

"The reality is that the only time that there's truly a shortage of a domain names, is if you must have a particular name", continued Tanna. "Only one entity can hold a particular name, but provided you're prepared to be flexible, there's plenty of good descriptive names still available for almost any type of business."
