Pressbox (Press Release) - The Reserva Playa Tortuga is a new research facility specializing in turtle conservation in the southern region of the Osa Peninsula. The local community of scientists formed a research facility to help preserve and protect the coastal natural resources of an area that runs from Cortes to Dominical, which is on Costa Rica's Pacific coast. The organizers of this facility are focused on research, education and conservation of the ecology but hoping to balance this with the needs of humans. This non-profit organization works with the local population to educate and develop sustainable programs.

11/21/10 - “Apathy is the real killer of conservation. You know, I’m 71 years old. So I’ve seen [biodiversity] go from vibrancy all around us — wild forests everywhere — to trashed and void landscapes in my lifetime. So I remember what it was like when there was primary forest right up the side of the road, on 50 percent of the roads in Costa Rica. Today there’s none — it’s all gone," says Daniel Janzen about Costa Rica's environmental changes. The biodiversity of the local ecosystem is critical to the survival of people. This organization measures the species, their compositions and tries to identify rare or endangered species.

The Reserva Playa Tortuga research facility is currently recruiting for volunteers to patrol the Tortuga beach. The patrols are at night. The organization needs volunteers for this role from July to January.

This is a great opportunity if vacationers are traveling to Costa Rica to get out and participate in protecting the environment. This non profit group has a web site at www.reservaplayatortuga.org and is also on facebook. To contact the group by phone, the local number is 2786-5200.
